in the Boston Phoenix Fall Preview.
(September 12, 1997)
Boston also sports a lively
underground electronica scene, which is represented most visibly by
the Toneburst collective. An assorted mix of DJs, ambient/experimental
musicians, performance artists, video technicians, and others, Toneburst
holds occasional events at odd locations throughout the city. A typical
party features rooms draped with lights, video screens, installation
art, and other multimedia toys, with electronica of every stripe as
the aural backdrop. This April, New York illbient provocateur DJ Spooky
and "mutantrumpet" player Ben Neill performed a breathraking
set of challenging, abstract beats with the Toneburst crew in a stunningly
decorated hall at Mass Art. Be on the look out for other special Toneburst
guests in the future...
